Old Sheffield
Old Sheffield - can any of the ex-Sheffield Officers help to identify the location. | Hi there all you old ex Sheffield Officers
The attached picture appeared on the BBC South Yorkshire Local History web site as an unidentified picture of 'Old Sheffield'.
Do any of you recognise the scene?
It has been suggested by two old 'B' Div men (Mike Bailey served 58/59 and Dave France Ex PC441) who have left their comments on the site, that it is a view of Water Lane with the old Charge Office and cells mid left of picture and the old CID offices opposite. I agree it looks very similar - the two figures in the picture appear to be standing at the bottom of the old Charge Office steps!
I am not however entirely convinced, I started there in 1962, and whilst the photo is obviously a lot older than that, I do not remember a) the high wall attached to the side of the Charge Office b) the lane to my recollection had a large yard to the side of the Charge Office from which amongst other things access was gained up a fire escape to the Tailoring Dept.c) I cannot either see a break in the building line where Castle St would cross. The lane seems to be much longer at this point than I recall.
Gentlemen your views please.
Regards Derek Hickinson
