Old Comrades
SOUTH YORKSHIRE POLICE OLD COMRADES ASSOCIATION
It is believed the Sheffield Branch of NARPO is unique in incorporating an Old Comrades Association. With a separate constitution, membership & funding arrangements it remains an entity in its own right, but organised and administered by Branch Officers and members.
Founded by the Chief Constable of Sheffield City Police in 1928 – Capt. Percy Sillitoe – (later to be Sir Percy Sillitoe head of MI5)- with the sole intention of an annual dinner being arranged so retired members of the Sheffield City Police Force could meet on one night a year, renew friendships and discuss past experiences over a meal.
Moving with the times the Association now incorporates retired members of the Sheffield & Rotherham Constabulary and the South Yorkshire Police. As a consequence it has naturally evolved into the South Yorkshire Police (Sheffield 1928) Old Comrades Association. The constitution is currently being revised and re-written to reflect this natural progression.
Traditionally the Dinner was always held at Police Headquarters of the day. The Chief Constable extended a warm invitation to retired officers to make use of the Force facilities, however in 2002 the membership reached 690 so the venue moved to the South Yorkshire Police Sports and Social Club at Niagara to accommodate increasing attendance.

An Association tie is made available to new members at the annual dinner.
Membership is now extended to all officers who retire from the South Yorkshire Police.
The Dinner has been held every year since 1928, even throughout the war years, and the Chief Constable has always attended unless urgent duty has demanded otherwise.
The vast majority of members are also members of NARPO. For an application form please contact the Secretary of the Sheffield Branch of NARPO.

Members of the Association a receive a letter in August each year giving details on the event and the venue
